Raspberry Planting and care instructions

Some tips and planting advice to help you get the best from your raspberry plants

Raspberries are best grown in rows and spaced at about 18inches (45cm). They can be planted along a fence line, or if you are planting more than one row set them 6 ft (1.8m) apart.

As with any new plants make sure that the soil is well prepared, and if possible add some well rotted organic matter before planting.  A sprinkle of bone meal is always a good thing. When planting bare root plants try to plant them at the same level or slightly below where they were originally planted. For potted plants simply dig a hole deep enough to cover the top of the plant with an inch of soil.

For bare-root plants cut back the canes to 9” (25cm) and once the new shoots appear from the ground cut this stem out completely. Train any new growth upwards using wires or very strong twine. Once the stems have finished fruiting cut them down to ground level.

An autumn/winter feed of bonemeal and a spring feed of blood fish and bone always help keep the plants going year after year!
